Sheikha Bodour's search for a queen offers revealing self-portrait of leading
.cultural thinker , Story by Sultan Al Qassemi
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi's new book
Let Them Know She is Here: Searching for the Queen of Mleiha.x
It stems from a 30-year curiosity that began in 1995 when Sheikha Bodour spent time at
Mleiha, an ancient archaeological site in Sharjah, as part of her application to study archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge University.x
For the past two and a half years I have had the opportunity to witness Sheikha Bodour work, as part of our commitments as members of the American University of Sharjah's board of trustees, which she chairs.x
More than once, I have found myself wishing for a way to share her everyday ethics with others, especially the younger generation of Emirati leaders who are in need of role models. Reading this book is an ideal way to gain insight into her leadership and do just that.x
For instance, Sheikha Bodour, who also holds an MSc in medical anthropology from University College London, makes a case for strengthening our bond with the planet. “When we lose connection to the land, we lose connection to ourselves,” she writes.x
By: Bodour Al Qasimi Woven from the ancient thread that binds us to our grandmothers and great-grandmothers, to the women who came before us and shaped the unseen foundations of our lives, this work stands as a meditation on memory, inheritance, and the silent power carried through generations.x
At its heart, the book speaks in the voice of a guide, a presence who has walked the sands and skies of this land for centuries: I came to teach you how to draw sigils in the sand, To speak the language of the land, To remember lost tribes and traditions Etched in the rocks, Sung in the rustle of desert palms.x
This voice teaches movement and belonging, how to find one’s place among the living world: I came to show you how to run like wild horses, To soar like falcons over sacred skies, To lose yourself among the stars And find your way back By reading the map hidden in your bones.x
Through distilled lines resonant with symbol and ancestral echo—Bodour Al Qasimi offers a return to the origins of identity: where memory is not spoken, but felt; where knowledge is not taught, but remembered.x
This is a book about lineage as compass, heritage as whisper, and the enduring presence of the women whose footsteps remain beneath the sand, guiding us still.x
